While both are used to move goods between different heights, they operate very differently: Dock Leveller: A permanent ramp built into a loading bay floor. It acts as a bridge, tilting slightly up or down to adjust to the height of a parked lorry bed. It is designed for fast, horizontal drive-through loading using forklifts or pallet trucks. Scissor Lift (Goods Lift): A platform that moves strictly vertically up and down using a criss-cross mechanism. It is used when there is a significant height difference (like moving goods between a ground-floor yard up to an elevated mezzanine or loading dock floor).

In the UK material handling and logistics industry, you will often hear a dock leveller referred to as a loading ramp, pit leveller, dock bridge, or bridging plate.

There are two main categories based on how the lip (the piece that rests on the lorry) extends, alongside different power systems: Hinged Lip (Swing Lip): The most common option. As the leveller rises, the lip swings open on a hinge and lowers gently onto the back of the vehicle. Telescopic Lip: Perfect for precise positioning. The lip slides straight out horizontally. This is ideal for vehicles that are packed right to the very edge, or for cold storage applications where you want to minimise heat loss. Mechanical vs. Hydraulic: Standard models are hydraulic (operated smoothly with the push of a button), but mechanical (spring-loaded, manual chain pull) versions are also available for sites without a power supply.

To pick the right system for your warehouse, you need to look at four main factors: Weight Capacity: Calculate the total weight of your heaviest forklift plus the heaviest load it carries. Your leveller needs to handle this total dynamic load safely. Vehicle Fleet Types: Measure the height differences between your warehouse floor and the lowest/highest lorry beds that visit your site. Lip Style: Choose a hinged lip for standard, straightforward loading, or a telescopic lip if you handle tightly packed containers or temperature-controlled trailers. Installation Layout: Determine if you are retrofitting into an existing concrete pit, building a new pit, or using an external "loading house" pod.

A high-quality, professionally installed dock leveller (such as those installed by Access and Dock, Birmingham) generally lasts between 10 to 15 years. However, this timeline depends entirely on its daily workload and maintenance schedule. Systems handling heavy, multi-shift operations will experience faster wear. To maximise its lifespan, legal compliance under PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) requires regular servicing and safety inspections.
